Recycled rubber products are a wonderful way to deplete our landfills of used tires. Recycled rubber sheet, rubber flooring, and eco-friendly rubber mats are less expensive as well. Since at Rubber-Cal we offer industrial rubber products with recycled rubber tire content, we always try and recommend recycled rubber (e.g., flooring) to our customers in place of virgin alternatives. We think this is more socially responsible and our customers prefer less expensive products with the same or better performance capabilities. Since we do have a strong influence on the clients buying habits, we take the initiative and in the basket of goods which are offered, we also offer recycled rubber. By offering recycled rubber flooring, for example, with post-consumer recycled content, in conjunction with virgin rubber flooring, a client would be able to make a more informed decision. Recycled rubber products are less expensive than their virgin or natural rubber counterparts therefore; their availability for certain applications will have excellent cost savings.
For certain applications recycled rubber flooring makes a lot more sense, such as outdoor use. Since most recycled rubber flooring and mats are made from tires, this is actually a plus for the product. Tires are very high quality rubber products. They are made to withstand the outdoors, the sun, rain, snow and lots and lots of abrasion. Once chopped up, these granules used in rubber flooring, are a great resource for the end-product. The high EPDM and other weather resistant materials in rubber tires, yield a far more environment resistant product, at very affordable rates. This has made the use of recycled rubbers very cost effective in playground flooring, gym flooring, outdoor decks, roof-top surfacing and many more applications. What was once a luxury, is now a cost effective commodity, like playground surfacing.
Recycled rubber sheet or flooring also do have consistent concerns, which makes them less attractive for certain applications. For one, they are made from recycled tires, and ultimately the product will be affected by the initial color of black. So all recycled rubber flooring colors are a function of the tire black. The red for example is a dark red. Also due to the fact that the rubber particles are bound back together with a polyurethane glue, the product is subject to damage when exposed to petroleum by-products which will affect the binder negatively. Moreover, recycled rubber flooring are also not impervious to liquids, like their virgin or natural counterparts.
