For outdoor flooring applications, materials containing EPDM are the most suitable. Since EPDM is ozone and UV stable, matting containing this material will exhibit a significantly longer life span when used outdoors. However, since pure EPDM is one of the more expensive sheet rubbers (due to the specific technical characteristics of this material), pure EPDM is too costly to use as a flooring or matting product (Elephant Bark Rubber Flooring, Playground Surfacing). Therefore, products containing a high percentage of EPDM provide a more cost effective alternative, while still preserving the essential outdoor-friendly characteristics. One of the benefits of recycled tire products for outdoor applications is that car tires (which are designed for constant exposure to the elements) contain a hefty amount of EPDM. For flooring designed for outdoor applications, the EPDM content of the recycled material is augmented by either blending colored EPDM speckles into the raw material or by coating the exposed surfaces with similar EPDM speckles. This makes recycled mats ideal for outdoor applications.
