You may be wondering what open cell rubber is. Not to be confused with regular solid rubber, it is a rubber foam material that is softer and spongier in nature and texture. This type of material is made when a foaming agent is introduced in the rubber’s creation process. This creates an air-filled cellular structure that is visible on these rubber sponge sheets. The open cell variant is different from its closed cell counterpart in that its structure is very visible to the naked eye and that it rebounds back to its original shape much faster. This particular type of rubber foam is a blend of SBR rubber and neoprene rubber. As a result, it features the unique characteristics of both of these elastomers into one single sponge rubber form.
Fast Rebound Rate: The unique feature about open cell rubber is that it can rebound back to its original shape very quickly. This is because the material itself is soft. If you have an application that requires a material to be repeatedly compressed and want that material to retain its original shape, then it is highly recommended that an open cell sponge rubber be used. Compared to its closed cell counterpart, the open cell version returns to its uncompressed state at a much faster rate.
Physically Durable: A unique differentiator about this rubber foam is the SBR rubber used within its blended makeup. SBR is known to be a tough and physically durable elastomer. It is often employed in applications where rough, physically abrasive conditions are expected. This characteristic is transferred over to these open cell rubber sponge sheets. They can handle light to moderate physical abrasions.
Light Oil Resistance: This open cell rubber benefits from the presence of neoprene rubber in its composition. Neoprene is widely used for applications that involve the presence of oils and greases. As a result of its presence, this rubber foam material can be used for contact with light amounts of oil and grease. Oil can seriously damage and degrade most other materials, but thanks to the presence of neoprene in these rubber sponge sheets, they will last against oil for a much longer period of time.
